CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Visitations from the School District Psychologist

The school year was almost out. Sunshine filled the courtyard where students loitered. I ate with the nerd herd at one of the picnic tables. Not that I was doing much eating yet.

Derrick and I demonstrated our juggling skills for our friends, tossing items to each other from our lunches. It was difficult to compensate for the variations in size and weight: a mozzarella cheese stick, a package of Chips Ahoy, mandarin oranges, and cartons of milk. Students eating at the other benches watched and clapped.

“You go, girl!” Mandy said, punching the air with a fist.

“Hey, what about me?” Derrick asked. His brow furrowed in concentration. “Why don’t you ever say, ‘You go, boy’?”

Madison, sitting next to Mandy, shouted, “You go, boy!”

They giggled and leaned toward each other, whispering conspiratorially.

Isaac slouched back on the bench. “You should try fire next.”

“We aren’t going to juggle fire. Ever,” I said. For starters, my mom would freak. Second of all, I would freak.

Derrick shrugged. “Never say never.”

All this conversation stole my concentration. I dropped the mozzarella stick. My aim was off as I tossed the cookie package at Derrick, and it struck him in the face. He fumbled to catch the carton of milk. His throw went wide, too far to the right for me to catch, and landed next to a couple making out on another bench.

Isaac scratched at the dragon tattoo on his neck. “Yeah, maybe fire isn’t such a good idea after all.”

Derrick tossed a package of cheese sticks in his face. We all cracked up. I retrieved the items I’d dropped, trying not to look at the teenagers sucking on each other’s faces, and returned the lunch snacks to the bench. Isaac snatched up Jessica’s mozzarella stick, but she stole it from him and hit him with it. They shoved at each other playfully, and we all laughed. I’d never imagined I would have so many friends or enjoy high school this much. I still wished my sister could have been one of my friends, but this wasn’t bad.

Madison stood up fifteen minutes before lunch was over. “I have to go to my locker and carry five tons of books for my afternoon classes all the way over to the math wing. I’ll see you guys later.”

Mandy jumped to her feet. “I’ll go with you. I can help you carry again. I work out.” She flexed her bicep. “Check out these guns.”

“You call that muscle?” Isaac rolled his eyes. “You’re a shrimp.”

“I don’t mind the company.” Madison bit her lip, smearing black lipstick on her teeth.

Jessica nudged me. I caught it too. Mandy had been volunteering to help Madison more and more. She kept contriving opportunities to spend time alone with her. It was cute the way they smiled shyly at each other. I suspected Madison liked Mandy as much Mandy liked her, but Madison had never come out and said she liked girls.

Mandy draped an arm around Madison’s shoulder as they skipped away.
